February 13, 2020

I had a great time at the Oregon MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Demo Day at OMSI earlier this week. I had the chance to meet with Executive Director, Tong Zhang, Ph. D, and learn about the innovative projects that students in the program are doing to solve real-life problems that affect local medical professionals.

Oregon MESA is an outreach program from Portland State University. Their mission is:

“To provide students underrepresented in the fields of mathematics, engineering, science, and technology with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to develop their talents, explore technology-based careers, enter college, and compete successfully in the workforce.”

I appreciate that the program facilitates positive experiences in the STEM field for underrepresented students so that they can envision a future for themselves in a related career. I hope Oregon MESA can expand, to elevate more students to achieve their potential.

MESA’s purpose is very similar to my own. I want to see everyone in our city, whether residents on the Eastside or students and educators, have the support and resources they need to thrive in our city. That’s why I’m running for Portland City Council.
