In November 2019, I introduced a transparent candidate endorsement process called Rise Together, which is designed to evaluate candidates on their shared values and commitment to building an equitable future for all Portlanders.
One of the candidates I’m excited to endorse is Julia DeGraw for Portland City Commissioner Position 2.
In the midst of a global pandemic that has further exposed the existing inequalities so many Portlanders live though every day, my immediate focus as an elected leader is to mitigate the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 by prioritizing our most vulnerable residents.
The truth is, we still have a lot of work to do and that work will continue after the worst of this health crisis is over. That’s why it’s so important that we think about the policies and leadership that will be needed as we come together as one Portland to build a more equitable and resilient future together.
With every city council seat up for grabs except the seat I won 2 years ago, I’ll need bold new leaders to join me in making sure that as Portland recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prioritizing frontline communities, workers, the houseless community, and those already living on the edge.
That’s why in the crowded race for City Council Position 2, I have endorsed Julia DeGraw for Portland City Council. She will need the support of each of you in order to win.
When speaking to Julia, you can tell she has done her homework. Julia demonstrates a deep knowledge of the issues facing Portland and the structural challenges that hinder our progress. Julia also has the climate justice lens that must be incorporated in this recovery. Julia proved she was a climate champion and successful organizer when she led the campaign to keep Nestle out of our beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Julia DeGraw is the type of creative, progressive thinker Portland needs to both understand the problems we face and to put together the kind of coalitions needed to make real progress.
Julia has a broad coalition of supporters, which represents her ability to bring together and work with diverse stakeholders to achieve common outcomes to benefit all Portlanders. Her endorsements include the Portland Association of Teachers, Oregon AFSCME Local 189, both PCC unions (PCCFFAP & AFT-Oregon Local 3922), Protec17, The Street Trust, Sunrise Movement PDX, national climate activist Bill McKibben, and former Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury.
Because of COVID-19, grassroots campaigns that rely on volunteers over big money contributions would normally be spending the weeks before an election knocking on doors, talking directly to voters. Now campaigns have to get creative, which is why it’s so important that you donate to Julia so she has the resources needed to win.
You can make a donation here:
Thanks to Portland’s Open & Accountable Elections program, the City will match $50 of each donation from a Portland resident 6-to-1! Since each donation from Portland residents will be matched, I encourage couples who are planning to donate to Julia’s campaign to make seperate contributions – that way, you can double your impact! The maximum amount that Julia can accept per person is $250.
I hope you will join me in supporting Julia DeGraw for Portland City Commissioner Position 2 by making a donation today.
Jo Ann Hardesty
P.S. Thanks to the Oregon Political Tax credit the first $50 ($100 if married and filing jointly) of most Oregonian’s donation is 100% refunded to you on your Oregon state taxes.
